Tai Chi Health Benefit Themes: Interoception, Awareness and Vitality

Interoception, Awwareness and Vitality image

Interoception is a relatively new field of neurophysiological study that has great relevance to mind-body practices, including tai chi. It is the underlying mechanism of how we actually “feel” our body’s internal messages and is considered one of our hidden sensory systems.

How does it work?

Our interoception system receives information from our internal organs about both our body states (hunger, pain) and our emotions (anxiety, fear, joy). These signals then go up to our brain (the insula in particular). Receiving these messages prompts us to act and adjust so that we can return to balance or homeostasis. Having good interoception is key to help us to self-regulate. If we are thirsty, we drink. If we are anxious, we often take a deep breath to calm down.

Interestingly, recent research has shown that mind-body practices, such as tai chi, can actually increase the size and functioning of our insula. The insula is an area of our brain that controls both our parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system response. These neurological systems are important ways that we receive and interpret stimuli, both internally and from our external environment.

What does this mean for our tai chi?

In tai chi, developing interoception is an integral part of our regular daily practice. We are often guided to ask ourselves, “how do you feel?”. Intentional pausing to allow this self-reflection is essential to developing this hidden sense.

For example, when we feel out of alignment or in pain, we can make structural adjustments to our body’s position. This can occur at any level; in the spine, pelvis or in any of our extremities. Similarly, we gradually learn how to adjust our mental focus. This ability, developed over time, helps to keep our mind free of intrusive thoughts, reduce any unnecessary pain or discomfort, and increase our overall sense of vitality. These are a few of the many wonderful gifts our tai chi practice can offer those who embrace this Art.

I wish our instructors had mentioned this. I hid my pain from them because I didn’t think they wanted to know about it.

    1. Oh dear. Thank you for sharing Janet. Please, always share any pain or discomfort you may feel during your practice. Your instructors surely want to know and will guide you! All the best.

Really insightful article that helps me appreciate how my practice of Tai Chi transfers positive benefits to everyday life. For me, at the moment, it is about alignment in daily postures.

Thank you for your comment, Nora! I am glad this information has been helpful to better understand the benefits of your tai chi practice. Physical alignment is so important as it can also change and improve the internal functioning of our body!

  3. Merci, tres bien fait. Tai Chi is such a gentle “force” for settling the body (in the best moments) and align with a more quiet mind/spirit. A very unique feeling of relaxation.
